OCTOBER 2009 BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS
LIGHT AND BRIGHT
The home office,
left,
is showered
in natural light most of the day.
Here, Patrice works on inspiration
boards, some of which she’s
framed above her desk. A white
office gives her a blank canvas for
creating color palettes for
clients—and for her own home.
MELLOW YELLOW
The bedroom wall color was
inspired by a house she once
toured in England. Patrice’s
husband doesn’t like overly
feminine or floral rooms, so she
chose wide-striped draperies,
below,
which introduce blue as an
accent color to the saturated
yellow. Both colors complement
the mahogany furniture. Wall

Patrice’s color tips
TRY SAMPLES Use the sample cans
that most paint brands provide. They
are one of the best developments in
the paint industry.
TEST PAINTS Paint swatches on
several different areas of your room
and study them at different times of
the day. Color changes throughout the
day as light interacts with it.
COMPLEMENT Choose an accent hue
and use it in small amounts throughout
the room.
GO FOR FABRIC A few yards of
distinctive, colorful fabric go a long way
toward making a space feel special. Try
experimenting first with throw pillows
or bedding, which are less of a
commitment.
